After losing the series opener, Sri Lanka came back strongly and defeated Australia in the second and final Test by an innings and 39 runs to level the series 1-1. Senior batter Dinesh Chandimal and debutant Prabath Jayasuriya were the main architects behind the epic victory of the Islanders at Galle International Stadium.
In reply to Australia’s 364, Chandimal smashed a tremendous double century to power Sri Lanka to a massive 554 in their first innings. Chandimal, who became the first Sri Lankan to hit a maiden double ton against the Aussies, remained unbeaten on 206 and gave the Islanders a 190 runs lead.
In response to the hosts first innings total, the visitors were bundled out for a mere 151, losing the contest by an innings and 39 runs. Debutant Jayasuriya, who picked up a six-wicket haul in the first innings, continued his golden run with the ball and exhibited another dominant performance in the second essay.
Jayasuriya bagged another six-wicket haul to completely crush the tourists, leading his side to a remarkable victory. Overall, the left-arm spinner picked up 12 wickets in the match and marked his grand arrival in the longest format.
