Cricket South Africa (CSA), on Friday, announced the South Africa Women squad for the upcoming inaugural edition of Commonwealth Games Women’s Cricket Competition 2022, starting July 29 in Birmingham.
Regular skipper Dane van Niekerk will miss another major tournament after failing to recover from an ankle injury. Notably, Van Niekerk broke her ankle after slipping and falling at her new home in Gqberha in January, which🍌 ruled her out of the ODI World Cup. She had returned to training but has not regained full fitness yet.
In Van Niekerk’s absence, Sune Luus will continue to captain the Proteas Women, with experienced campaigner Mignon du Preez making a comeback after being left out of the outfit that played against Ireland. Some other players such as Marizanne Kapp, Sinalo Jafta and Masabata Klaas have also returned to the T20I squad.
“With key players not available, we remain very excited to compete in the Commonwealth Games. Having Mignon du Preez adds experience to the squad and allows for some strategic changes in the batting line-up. It once again allows the opportunity for players to showcase their skills, as post the Games we prepare for the home T20 World Cup, and the team has the capabilities to finish within the medals,” said CSA Momentum Proteas Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez.
“We could not have asked for a better opportunity to prepare for these Games, with the tour of Ireland and also against England. It has allowed for much rotation and opportunities for players. We would like to take that momentum into the Games and have the players in a positive space as we compete,” he added.
