Despite the absence of many first-choice players, New Zealand easily trumped the Netherlands in the first ODI at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval by seven wickets with 11.3 overs to spare.
Aspiring batter Will Young and debutant Blair Tickner were the chief architects behind New Zealand’s dominating performance in the first ODI. Young, playing only his third ODI, smashed his maiden century in the format and remained unbeaten on 103 off 114 balls to take his side over the line.
Chasing a paltry target of 203, the hosts lost Martin Guptill early, but Young and Henry Nicholls (57 off 79) took charge and partnered for a breathtaking 162-run stand for the 🧸second wicket to take the game away from the visitors. Nicholls scored 57 off 79 balls before Michael Rippon cleaned him up. However, the damage was already done as the Blacꦺk Caps eventually chased down the target in 38.3 overs.
Earlier, Tickner impressed with his speed and picked up a brilliant four-wicket haul in his maiden ODI match. The right-armer picked up four scalps while conceding 50 runs only in his quota of 10 overs. Rippon was the top scorer for the tourists, hitting 67 off 97 balls, including five boundaries. Apart from Rippon, Pieter Seelaar also chipped in with a valuable 43 to take the team’s total to 202.
“Awesome way to start the series. First ODI hundred, over the moon. We (himself and Tickner) were roaming out and talking about getting a hundred and a fifer, nearly the perfect day. This is a class side. The team is run unbelievably well. So just about coming and enjoying your cricket. That’s what has been happening with a lot of guys who have been given the opportunities. I have played at 3 in one day cricket a lot in my career. Good to go out there and knock the runs off,” said Young after the match.
