Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has been appointed as the new assistant coach of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals (DC).
Agarkar will join the franchise after completing his commentary assignment in the ongoing India versus Sri Lanka series. The 2022 IPL edition will begin on March 26 with the final set to be played on May 29. Four venues – the Wankhede Stadium and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune – will host the league phase featuring 70 matches.
“I am very excited to be a part of Delhi Capitals squad for this season,” Agarkar said, on the development.
“I have been lucky enough to be a player and to be returning in a different capacity. It’s obviously very exciting. We have a young and terrific squad led by one of the most talented players in the world – Rishabh Pant. And the coach Ricky Ponting has been a legend of the game. Looking forward to working with them, can’t wait to get started and create some special memories,” he added.
The 44-year-old, with 288 ODI and 58 Test wickets to his name, played for DC from 2011 to 2013. He was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2008 to 2010. He will join the Capitals’ coaching staff of Ponting, James Hopes (bowling coach) and Pravin Amre (assistant coach).
