Gautam Gambhir fumes at ESPNcricinfo for sharing picture of MS Dhoni’s six on the anniversary of India’s 2011 WC triumph

On Thursday morning, former India opener and now a Member of Parꦕliament (MP) Gautam Gambhir lashed out at popular cricket website ESPNCricinfo for their tweet on the 2011 World Cup final.

Gambhir was the top scorer in that match with a gritty 97 after India lost the wickets of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli. Gambhir, as always, curbed his n💟aturally aggressive instincts and made his runs off 122 balls with 9 hits to the boundary.

While nostalgia among the fans hit hard on the anniversary of India’s 2011 WC triumph, it was Gambhir’s tweet that got the most attention.

“Just a reminder @ESPNcricinfo: #worldcup2011 was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” Gambhir tweeted.

While Gambhir’s efforts were absolutely brilliant in the match and it was certainly a team effort, only the man himself can explain the reason for such a tweet. Also, a few of the fans slammed him for the same.

Al༺so, in an earlier interview, Gambhir had subtly blamed MS Dhoni for his dismissal. Dhoni had reportedly reminded Gambhir that he needed just three runs to get to his century, which distracted him and subsequently led to his dismissal.

But this is all about Gambhir’s tweet. While he is right about the fact that the entire team won, everyone will remember three moments from that match – the Indian team lifting Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders, Yuvraj Singh breaking down after the win, and Dhoni’s six. Some people remember Gambhir’s 97. Fewer remember that Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene scored a century in the summit clash.
