Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler was on his way to a great century, but Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin noticed that wicketkeeper-batsman was backing up at the non-striker’s end.
Ashwin acted as if he is delivering the ball and then took ꧋the bails off once Buttler had left the crease during the fourth match of the ongoing IPL in Jaipur on Monday.
Unhappy Buttler leaves the field
There was an animated discussion between Ashwin and Buttler when the former appealed after ‘mankading’. It seemed that Ashwin had warned him before but the discussion turned into an argument soon. The KXIP captain didn’t withdraw his appeal and Buttler had to walk off with despair.
The match was in an interesting situation at that stage and Buttler’s wicket literally turned the game in the visitors’ favour: KXIP won the match by 14 runs.
The cricket fraternity showed mixed-reactions on T🎀witter reg꧟arding the incident.

How is getting an advantage by starting early by the batsman be in the 'spirit of the game'? BTW this is not the first time this has happened with Jos Butler
— Deep Dasgupta (@DeepDasgupta7)
I can’𝔉t believe what I’m seeing!! Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin wil🐠l regret that.

The Mankad is so so wrong. Terribl♓e sportsmanship IMO
— Andy Balbirnie (@balbo90)
My opinion on the Buttler/Ashwin controversy is that its NOT Buttler𒈔s fault and its NOT Ashwins fault eit꧋her
Ashwin is entitled to appeal
I thought the TV umpire m♕ade the incorrect dec𒈔ision
Shouldve been dead ball….. play on

Buttler was still in his crease when Ashwin was in his delivery stride! He wasn’t trying to gain an advantage! He was literally walking in with the bowler…

If had been warned well that’s fine … if he hasn’t and it’s the first time I think is completely out of order … watch how often this happens from now on !!!!!!!

— Tino95 (@tinobest)
Oh hell! Ashwin's run Butler out for backing up too far. Within the laws, but outside the spirt of the game. Unless the batsman had been cautioned earlier. We'll know about that later. For now, Punjab get coveted breakthru and the IPL its first major controversy this season

What an ab𝕴solute disgrace! spitting tacs and rightfully so!!!
— Mitchell McClenaghan (@Mitch_Savage)
It’s within 🐎the laws of the game but Jos Butler should have been warned by Ashwin before that. Very Surprised ! Remember Ashwin💎 doing the same in an international game where Sehwag withdrew the appeal.

Well the fair play award isn’t going to Mohali this year….
— Sam Billings (@sambillings)
Very very poor wasn’t it
— Chris Lynn (@lynny50)
Feel ꦰsad for . Hope this rule changes to give a compulsory wa🐭rning first, before a bowler can go for !
— Pragyan Ojha (@pragyanojha)
Lots of drama on the Buttler run-out. He was livid but the law and the advisory on it is clear. The bowler is within his right to run a player out at the non-striker's end if he is out of his crease
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha)
Ashwin ♑was co꧑mpletely within his rights to dismiss butler there. Don’t understand how Spirit of Cricket can be questioned. How many times have u seen a batsman wait for Umpires decision when he knew he was out?
