Just when it looked AB de Villiers is all set for a big knock, India’s debutant Jasprit Bumrah marked his arrival in the longest format by making the South African star batsman his first Test wi𒈔cket in the first game of the 3 match series at Newlands Stadium.
After being asked to bowl first, Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave the visitors a flying start by running riot at the start. The right-arm pacer sent back South Africa’s top-three – Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram and Hashim Amla with just 12 runs on the board.
However, AB de Villiers, who is playing his first five-day Test in nearly two years, launched a stunning counterattack to ease the pressure on his side. And by the time the lunc♎h was taken, he was batting on 59 off just 65 balls.
But just when it seemed the former South Africa skipper was in the mood, he was undone by a Bumrah’s delivery. The debutant bowled a fuller length around the off stump, making ABD go for the drive, and while doing so, he left a big gap between bat and body. The ball took a thin edge of his bat before going on to shatter the stumps as India made a fine start to the post-launch session. The wicket also broke the 114-run stand between de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.
